West Bend 84905 5-Quart Oblong-Shaped Slow Cooker
I am very dissapointed in my new West Bend Slow Cooker. I had a West Bend Cooker like the one I ordered for over 30 years. I loved it and ;used it often. The heating element finally gave out, I wanted one just like my old one but it is not. The handels on my old one never got hot and you could hold on to it, the new one does not have the same handels. The heating elemnt does not get as hot. I was making beef stew last week and it did not even cook on high for 8 hours, I had to fix someting else for dinner and start cooking it again the next day.So Sorry
west bend slow cooker April 29, 2010 C. Taylor (Indiana) Husband has one from years ago that cooks like a champ, this one the top doesn't fit tight making cook time a bit longer. Can't find them in a store anywhere.
Great product, but not a substitute for crockery style cooker April 20, 2010 TheHollands (Oklahoma) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I have had this West Bend cooker for 11 years. Though I don't use it all that often, it has been reliable. I have never had any problem with it whatsoever. It heats fairly quickly and the base can be used alone as a small electric skillet. It is easy to clean, lightweight and easy to store. It's oblong shape is also good for long pieces of meat.
However, if you are looking for a slow cooker to set before work and leave cooking all day, I would not recommend this one. I have tried to use crockery cooker recipes in it, but it cooks too fast for that, even on the low setting. If you are looking for a product that will cook a meal in a few hours (as opposed to all day) then this product is more suited to you. Be aware, however, that because all the heat comes from the base instead of being distributed throughout the pot (as in crockery cookers), an unturned piece of meat will generally overcook on the bottom side if left for more than 6 hours.
An Old Favorite March 23, 2010 H. Raymond (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I cook nearly every day and use the slow cooker about once a week, mostly during the fall and winter. I had an old version of this slow cooker for about 15 years. I loved it and never had a problem with it. Finally, the old fella's base started to peel and the finish inside the pot was really getting worn. So I decided to "get with the times" and buy a fancier slow cooker. So I bought one of those big, stainless steel cookers with the ceramic bowl type insert. It had settings for warm, low and high, and a timer so I could set it for the time specified in the recipe, and then it would automatically turn to warm to keep the food warm until it was dinner time.
I used my new fancy-shmancy cooker exactly 3 times - trying to get the setting right. All three times (once with a whole chicken, once with sausage and peppers and once with vegetable soup) I set it to low. And all three times I set it for less time than the recipe called for, just in case. And all three times I came home during the cooking cycle to find the cooker at a rolling boil! The food was terrible - over cooked and washed out. So - I returned my new-fangled cooker, and got another one of these. The best.
The dial goes from 1 to 5, and I mostly cook on 2 for the whole day - up to 8 hours. It is perfect. You cannot go wrong with this cooker. I hope to have this one for another 15 years!
